Ю.Р. Романова начала свою научную карьеру в отделе вирусологии в Санкт-Петербургском институте экспериментальной медицины (Россия), где она принимала участие в разработке живой холодоадаптированной вакцины против гриппа. После защиты кандидатской диссертации Ю.Р.Романова работала в Королевском Медицинском университете (Ньюкасл, Австралия) и в Центрах по контролю за заболеваниями (CDC, США). С 1995 по 2006 Ю.Р. Романова работала, в Институте прикладной микробиологии (Вена, Австрия). В 2006 году Ю.Р. Романова перешла работать в компанию Avir Green Hills Biotechnology AG (Вена, Австрия), которая разрабатывала противогриппозную вакцину нового поколения, получаемую методами обратной генетики. Эта технология основана на аттенуации вируса гриппа путем делеции гена неструктурного белка NS1. Ю.Р.Романова возглавляла отдел подготовки вакцинных штаммов. С этого времени ее главный научный интерес был связан с изучением генетических детерминант инфекционности вируса гриппа и иммуногенности противогриппозных вакцин. Ю.Р.Романова показала, что эффективность интраназальной вакцинации требует определенного уровня стабильности главного поверхностного белка вируса гемагглютинина в целях достижения оптимального заражения эпителиальных клеток респираторного тракта и индукции максимального иммунного ответа. А показатель рН активации белка гемагглютинина является основным фактором инфекционности высоко патогенных вирусов гриппа птиц для млекопитающих. В 2012 г. Ю.Р.Романова защитила диссертацию на соискание степени доктора биологических наук.
